"The boy who is going to make a great man must not make up his mind merely to overcome a thousand obstacles, but to win in spite of a thousand repulses and defeats."

Did you know? It is Caribbean American Heritage Month!
Look for songs by Caribbean artists all month.

"We are the champions..."
- From the song 'We Are The Champions We Are The West Indies' by The Tradewinds

"I used to think that losing made you more hungry and determined but after my success at the Olympics and the U.S. Open I realize that winning is the biggest motivation."
- Andy Murray

"Successful and unsuccessful people do not vary greatly in their abilities. They vary in their desires to reach their potential."
- John Maxwell

"Money has never been my motivation with tennis...I have always just played to win Grand Slams."
- Serena Williams, from Five Lessons on Motivation from Serena Williams By Glen Hellman,

"No matter what business you’re in, you’re always at risk—particularly in technology, where it changes so rapidly you’ve got to put in the effort to keep up. There’s always the opportunity for some 18-year-old to come out of nowhere and crush you—that motivates the hell out of me....
Another motivation is what you might call the concept of always. When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re always trying to win. You’re always trying to improve. You’re always trying to compete for customers. You’re always trying to stay ahead. You’re always cognizant of people trying to kick your ass. You’re always trying to kick your own ass before someone else does. It’s really no different from a sport."
- Mark Cuban, How to Motivate Yourself,

For some people and in some situations, it is difficult to pick up the pieces after a loss or after hearing no time and time again. Losing should motivate and provide the drive to win (at the same thing/same area or in a different area).

Song lesson:
From 'Push It To The Limit' by Corbin Bleu:

Work, work it harder
Gotta take it further
No holding back
You know we gotta do it right now
Be even better

Winning could be getting a new job or graduating on time. One thing is for sure....

"A quitter never wins and a winner never quits."
- Napoleon Hill
"Where there is a will there is a way."
- Proverb

"The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win."
-Roger Bannister
Winning requires effort. In a competitive environment, a person's motivation could provide the edge - the drive to push it to the limit.

Song lesson: 'Lose To Win' by Fantasia Barrino

"Sometimes you gotta lose to win again."

"Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence. The extra energy required to make another effort or try another approach is the secret if winning."
- Denis Waitley
"To win you need to have first lost. That makes you so hungry to win that you'll do everything you can to achieve it."
- Brendon Clark
Michael Jordan: I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times,  I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
Losing is not a waste. Sometimes a person must lose to win. Losing can lead to a string of wins and achievements.

"Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday."
- Wilma Rudolph
