Response to question on discipline by LifeLessonsForAll.com's LessonsAsk...
Question: How do I improve my discipline?
Response:
Just like exercise gradually improves body tone and muscle, practicing control, restraint, and willpower improves a person's discipline. Discipline is control - the ability to control one's desires, the ability to say no, the ability to persevere.
To improve discipline, practice controlling negative urges and desires, practice giving up or sacrificing something you like for a short period, and practice sticking to a schedule or plan such as an exercise routine or diet plan. This could be done all alone or with the help of others.

With discipline, you move in the right direction!
From the song 'Step by Step' by Whitney Houston:
And this old road is rough and ruined,
So many dangers along the way,
So many burdens might fall upon me,
So many troubles that I have to face.
But I won't let my spirit fail me,
But I won't let my spirit go,
Until I get to my destination,
I'm gonna take it slow.
Because I'm taking it....
Step by step,
Bit by bit,
Stone by stone,
Brick by brick.

Are you resolved to do the right thing?…….
From the song 'I Am Resolved':
I am resolved no longer to linger,
Charmed by the world’s delight,
Things that are higher, things that are nobler,
These have allured my sight.
I will hasten to Him, hasten so glad and free;
Jesus, greatest, highest, I will come to Thee.

"What's the difference between motivation and discipline? I like to think of discipline as ‘what to do’ and motivation as ‘why to do.’ …
So I think of self-discipline as teaching yourself self-control and shaping your behavior, so that you’re not a slave to your motivations…. I think you find your motivations when you ask questions such as ‘What do you want to do?’ and ‘What do you want to avoid?’ and ‘Why do you want to do that?’ I think you encourage discipline when you ask yourself ‘What’s the best thing for you to do?"

"Self-discipline is often disguised as short-term pain, which often leads to long-term gains. The mistake many of us make is the need and want for short-term gains (immediate gratification), which often leads to long-term pain."

Staying the course, anyway......
From the song 'Anyway' by Martina McBride:
You can spend your whole life building
Something from nothing
One storm can come and blow it all away,
Build it anyway.
You can chase a dream
That seems so out of reach,
And you know it might not ever come your way,
Dream it anyway.
God is great, but sometimes life ain't good,
When I pray it doesn't always turn out like I think it should,
But I do it anyway.
I do it anyway.

"[I]n SEAL training there is a bell….All you have to do to quit is ring the bell. Ring the bell and you no longer have to wake up at 5 o’clock. Ring the bell and you no longer have to do the freezing cold swims. Ring the bell and you no longer have to do the runs, the obstacle course, the PT and you no longer have to endure the hardships of training. Just ring the bell. If you want to change the world don't ever, ever ring the bell."

From the song 'Gotta Be' by Des'ree:
Listen as your day unfolds, challenge what the future holds,
Try and keep your head up to the sky.
Lovers, they may cause you tears,
Go ahead release your fears, stand up and be counted
Try and keep your head up to the sky.
Lovers, they may cause you tears,
Go ahead release your fears, stand up and be counted
Don't be ashamed to cry.
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser,
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger.
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together,
All I know, all I know, love will save the day.
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger.
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together,
All I know, all I know, love will save the day.
Herald what your mother said,
Read the books your father read,
Try and solve the puzzles in your own sweet time.
Some may have more cash than you,
Others take a different view, my oh my, heh, hey.

From the song 'Hold On' by Wilson Phillips:
Some day somebody's gonna make you want to turn around and say goodbye,
Until then baby are you going to let them hold you down and make you cry,
Don't you know?
Don't you know things can change,
Things'll go your way,
If you hold on for one more day.

Why is discipline important? Discipline teaches us to operate by principle rather than desire. Saying no to our impulses (even the ones that are not inherently sinful) puts us in control of our appetites rather than vice versa. It deposes our lust and permits truth, virtue, and integrity to rule our minds instead."
